Garbage Management Plan

MARPOL 73/78 requires every ship of 100 gross tonnage and above and every ship certified to carry 15 or more persons, and fixed or floating platforms shall carry a Garbage Management Plan which the crew shall follow. Every ship of 400 gross tonnage and above and every ship which is certified to carry 15 or more persons engaged in voyages to ports or offshore terminals under the jurisdiction of another Party to the Convention and every fixed or floating platform shall be provided with a Garbage Record Book. 

In addition, every ship of 12 meters or more in length overall and fixed or floating platforms, shall display placards to notify the crew and the passengers of the ship’s disposal requirements. This regulation to Annex V of MARPOL 73/78 firstly entered into force on 1 July 1998 for ships built before 1 July 1997, and amended as per resolution MEPC.201(62) with effective date 1 January 2013.
